May 2019 – A Note From The Editor

Cynthia and Charles at the office of Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) on Capitol Hill. We had a great time with the SHRM Advocacy Teams from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee at the SHRM Employment Law Conference in Washington, D.C., March 18-20.

You are going to love this issue! In March we kicked off the spring conference season at our nation’s capitol at my favorite SHRM Conference – The 2019 SHRM Employment Law Conference. Some of the greatest legal minds in the country gather in Washington annually for this most educational and informative conference. In addition, we get to visit Capitol Hill and talk to our congressmen and senators about the issues impacting our workplace. If you are not already a member of the SHRM Advocacy Team, I encourage you to join!

Next, we traveled down south to Atlanta for the SHRM-Atlanta HR Conference SOAHR 2019 held at the Cobb Galleria Center March 25-27.This is one of the largest SHRM chapters in the country with over 2,000 members! Over 1200 were in attendance to hear some of the top thought leaders in the HR community including our own Greg Hare with Ogletree Deakins and Marty Martenson with Martenson Hasbrouck & Simon LLP. Special thanks to them for being sponsors for this event. Littler was also a sponsor of this fabulous conference. Be sure to catch our Facebook Live videos with Greg and Marty along with Kathryn McConnell with Littler. They offered some great legal advice for HR professionals! Check out the conference on Page 44-45.

We were on the road almost the entire month of April covering the important SHRM state conferences for the May issue. It all started in Hot Springs Arkansas with the ARSHRM 2019 HR Conference & Expo. One of the highlights of the conference was “The Fearless Food Fight” sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arkansas to feed 30,000 hungry people in their state. Be sure to review the photos on Page 36-37. We also have some fantastic Facebook Live videos from the conference. Pictorial highlights are on Page 36-37. From Hot Springs we drove to Nashville for the SHRM Talent Conference where over 1,000 HR professionals gathered at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel to learn about the new SHRM initiatives to “Get Talent Back to Work.” SHRM has several new initiatives to encourage employment in this tight labor market including a new toolkit. Visit the website, www.GettingTalentBackToWork.org, and take the pledge! We will bring you the exciting highlights from this conference in our June issue. We will also have exciting highlights from the 2019 ALSHRM Conference in Birmingham May 15-16 and the WTSHRM Conference in Jackson May 1 in our June issue.
